Longterm Hiatus

Dear Followers,
I have neglected this blog and my blogging duties and allowed Scribing Shadows to become a ghost and for that I am sorry. Long ago when I was still active I said I would let my readers know if I were planning on going on a break and unfortunately I never did that. This break wasn’t planned of course but even after I realized that I wouldn’t be updating for a while I didn’t let you guys know what was going on. I also apologize to all the persons that had contacted me for requests for reviews and guest blogging that I have already accepted. I will try to contact all of you in the following weeks.

My reasoning for not being active is that I have been in a reading rut for over six months now. I have read a total of two books I believe and it looks like this rut is going to continue for the unforeseeable future. I doubt this will be a permanent thing as I love reading but I don’t love book blogging as much as I used to and don’t really miss it for the moment. This may all change of course but even if or when I do return I will not be as active as I used to be.

I did a couple of giveaways a long time ago but have yet to announce or contact any winners. I feel very guilty about that and still plan on sending out prizes but funds are limited at the moment as I try to save up for certain things so please continue to be patient. All the winners will receive their prizes in due course.

Since I will be gone for a long while I am going to disable comments to stop all the spam that likes to move into deserted territories.

Thank-you all for being with me throughout the years, for the follows, the comments and the discussions. I completely understand if you move on from here, I would have a long time ago.

Sandy

Waiting on Wednesday - 17 and Gone by Nova Ren Suma

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Publisher: Dutton | Author: Nova Ren Suma | Release Date: March 21st 2013

Seventeen-year-old Lauren is having visions of girls who have gone missing. And all these girls have just one thing in common—they are 17 and gone without a trace. As Lauren struggles to shake these waking nightmares, impossible questions demand urgent answers: Why are the girls speaking to Lauren? How can she help them? And . . . is she next? As Lauren searches for clues, everything begins to unravel, and when a brush with death lands her in the hospital, a shocking truth emerges, changing everything

Why am I waiting?

Sounds like this will be a mystery slash thriller and all darkness. I mean look at the cover, sure don't judge a book by it's cover, but Nova says the cover is a perfect fit for the book and who would know better than the author right? The cover tells me this book will be intense and I am all for an intense read.

Waiting on Wednesday - Dualed by Elsie Chapman

Publisher: Random House | Author: Elsie Chapman Release Date: Spring 2013

The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.

Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.

Elsie Chapman’s suspenseful début weaves unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.

Why am I waiting?

Has anyone here ever read Doppelgänger/Warrior by Marie Brennan? It's a high fantasy set in a world where witches are born with a doppelgänger and the doppelgänger is killed as soon as it's born but for some reason the main character's doppelgänger was saved and grew up away from all the witches. Unfortunately for the MC because the doppelgänger wasn't killed she is now dying and the only way to save herself is to kill her double and that raises hard questions. Who deserves to live? How far will you go to save yourself? Why is your life more important? Questions I believe this book will ask which means not only could it be fast pace and action packed but it has the potential to be quite thought provoking which could move it up from entertaining and fun to all around great.

The Interview

How did you come up with the premise for RULES, the first book of the upcoming PROJECT PAPER DOLL series?
SK: Though it sounds completely bizarre, I went back to my own high school experience. One of the things I remember most is this overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety that someone would discover that I was really this uncoordinated, socially awkward nerd. (The truth is, that wasn’t a secret, but I was working very hard to make it seem like that was NOT who I was.)

And I combined that fear of discovery with the idea that Ariane really had something to hide. That she’s this escaped science project, that she’s not entirely human.

PROJECT PAPER DOLL sounds like it’s going to have a more serious tone than THE GHOST AND THE GOTH, did your writing routine differ or change for the new series?
SK: The Rules is a much longer book and, for me, more emotional in the sense that I had to dig deep into some pretty intense feelings. Fear, betrayal, loss, among them. So, I don’t think my routine varied too much, but it took me longer to write the book. But that could also be because it tops out at 100 pages longer than the longest G&G book (Body & Soul)! :)

If THE GHOST AND THE GOTH was made into a movie, who would you love to see involved in the project?  SK: Oh, goodness, I would be thrilled just to see it as a movie. I think the models on the cover are perfect as Will and Alona, so I’d love to see actors who look very similar play the roles. Mean Girls is one of my favorite movies, as is Easy A, and I would love for the director of either of those films to be involved.

As an award-winning corporate copywriter, Stacey Kade has written about everything from backhoe loaders to breast pumps. But she prefers to make things up instead.

She lives in the Chicago suburbs with her husband, Greg, and three retired racing greyhounds, Joezooka (Joe), Tall Walker (Walker) and SheWearsThePants (Pansy). When she’s not reading or writing, you’ll likely find her parked in front of the television with her Roswell DVDs, staring rapturously at Jason Behr.

The Ghost and the Goth is her first YA novel. You can find her (far too often) on Facebook and Twitter as well as http://www.staceykade.com.Find Stacey Kade @

Crossroads Tour: Judith Graves + KINDLE GIVEAWAY

It is Day 7 of the annual 2012 Crossroads Tour and you lucky reader still have the chance to read interviews from 13 authors on 8 blogs and to also have a chance to win fabulous prizes including the big prize - a Kindle!

The Interview

The STRANGEWAYS series is a prequel series to SKINNED, did you always plan to have this prequel series or did the inspiration for it occur during your writing of SKINNED?
JG: Ah…which came first…in this case, SKINNED with nary a hint of a steampunk prequel. Then I wrote a short story about a ghosthunter set in an alternate version of New York in 1915, one that featured gears, and magic, ghosts and a pesky organization known as the Hunter Council. And eureka – I realized I was writing about the same Council that stalked the pages of the SKINNED series - only way back in the day, when its intentions were (probably) good. The fact that I had several immortal characters as my disposal from SKINNED, able to make cameo appearances in STRANGEWAYS, hooked me on the task of linking the two worlds.

They blend rather smoothly, thanks to a few paradoxes and magical whatnots. ;)

What do your heroines Eryn and Amelia have in common what do they most definitely not have in common?
JG: Both are feisty, kickass heroines who are out to prove something to themselves – and their naysayers - that they can gain control of their paranormal skills. While Amelia faces a few extra challenges due to the attitudes toward the women of her day – I’d say both girls have a pretty solid roster of forces plotting against them.

I think it would be fair to say Amelia’s tale is classic WOman versus environment, bucking convention while discovering her abilities and her power as a woman, while Eryn’s struggle is more WOman versus nature - with that bestial nature residing under her skin.

If Eryn and Amelia had a throw down….I’m not sure who’d come out alive – hmm….might be interesting to find out someday.

Do you find it easier to write short stories or full length novels?
JG: Both forms are hell on my diet, that’s certain. ;) When I write, I tend to munch on treats. And with Halloween, there are treats aplenty around the house.

I often start with a short story, or the first few pages of a concept and then develop it into a longer work, so I’d say that short works have their appeal. However, I love diving into characters in ways that only a novel can allow. You have the time, the word count, and the breathing room to reveal many of the little nuggets of a character’s backstory that you have to hold back in other forms.

Residing in a northern Alberta community, similar to the fictional town of Redgrave, where Under My Skin is set - Judith unhappily endures snow in the winter, and runs away from bees in the summer.

A firm believer that Canadian teen fiction can be sexy, action packed and snarky as hell - Judith writes paranormal stories with attitude.
